This was the refurbishment and extension of a semi-detached home in Mayford, done whilst at BetterPAD.

The house started life as a two up, two down and had already been previously extended by the client to provide an additional bedroom on the first floor and larger kitchen, living and dining space on the ground floor. However, the entry sequence was awkward with stairs up to the first floor directly in front of you as you entered the house, interrupting the route through to the kitchen at the rear of the house which was accessed through the snug.

We completely reworked this by shifting the stairs to the side of the house and providing a corridor with glass doors and a view through from the front door, straight through to the rear garden on the far end of the house. The new stair had room to breathe with a double height space above, an airy office was added and the new extension to the rear of the house provided a generous and light filled kitchen / living / dining space. A utility was added next to the snug and storage was provided next to the office.

Through the use of natural larch cladding and a wildflower green roof, the extension nestled itself into the beautiful rear garden, designed by Stefano Marinaz Landscape Architects. The large garden was split into three distinct zones: perennial planting and seating close to the house, a wildflower meadow and a kitchen garden.
